July 13, 2017: Erica Shamaly has been hired as the Music and Entertainment Division Manager for the city of Austin, Texas, effective on Monday, July 24, 2017. Shamaly was previously the director of marketing for ACL Live at the Moody Theater. Shamaly succeeds Don Pitts, who resigned in April, 2017. As the Manager of the Music and Entertainment Division, which is part of the Economic Development Department, Shamaly is in charge of managing policies affecting the city's music industry. Pitts had run the division since its creation in 2010, and his resignation occurred at a crucial time for Austin's live music scene. Spurred by a report from Austin Music People that found the city had lost 1,200 music jobs between 2010 and 2014, Mayor Steve Adler led an effort to create policies that support local music venues and artists. In January, 2017, the Austin City Council passed a measure that would actually begin to fund some of those programs. Shamaly, a University of Texas graduate, previously worked as the director of business development and marketing for the Reverberation Appreciation Society, which runs Austin Levitation Fest, formerly Psych Fest. She also co-founded the Austin School of Film and she worked on the board of directors for the Texas Motion Picture Alliance.
