Peter Newsham re-hired as Washington, D.C., Police Chief

Jan. 9, 2019: Washington, D.C., Police Chief Peter Newsham and D.C. State Superintendent of Education Hanseul Kang were re-appointed to their positions by Mayor Muriel Bowser on Monday, Jan. 7, 2019. Bowser made the announcements as she started her second four-year term in office as the D.C. Mayor. Newsham was hired as the D.C. Police Chief in 2017. Kang has led the D.C. city government’s Office of the State Superintendent of Education since 2015. Kang is set to be the longest-serving education official in Bowser’s administration. The Office of the State Superintendent of Education handles issues involving traditional and public charter schools, including truancy, academic standards and graduation requirements. Bowser also announced on Monday, Jan. 7, 2019, that she would appoint her Deputy Chief of Staff, Lindsey Parker, as the District city government’s Chief Technology Officer. Economic Development official Andrew Trueblood was named as the Director of the D.C. Office of Planning, as city officials revise their comprehensive plan to guide growth.
