U.S. Air Force Gen. John Hyten nominated as Vice Chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff, U.S. Department of Defense

April 11, 2019: U.S. Air Force Gen. John E. Hyten was nominated as the Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff at the U.S. Department of Defense on Tuesday, April 9, 2019. Hyten is currently the Commander of the U.S. Strategic Command at Offutt Air Force Base in Nebraska. Hyten started his military career in 1981, and he has held several leadership positions at the Air Force, including Commander of the Air Force Space Command, Director of Space Acquisition and Cyber and Space Operations, and Requirements Chief at the Air Force Space Command Headquarters. He commanded the 595th Space group and the 50th Space wing at Schriever Air Force Base in Colorado. He was deployed to Southwest Asia in 2006 as the Director of Space Forces. Hyten received the Distinguished Service Medal, the Legion of Merit, and the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, among other awards.
