Shawnie Rechtenbaugh appointed Secretary, South Dakota Department of Human Services

May 15, 2019: Shawnie Rechtenbaugh was appointed as the full-time Secretary of the South Dakota Department of Human Services by Gov. Kristi Noem on Thursday, May 9, 2019. Rechtenbaugh, of Pierre, S.D., was the department’s Acting Secretary since January, 2019. Rechtenbaugh has worked in South Dakota since 2006. She started her career as the State Prevention Coordinator for the Human Services Department. Before she joined the Noem administration, Rechtenbaugh worked at the South Dakota Department of Public Safety as the State 9-1-1 Coordinator. She was then promoted to Deputy Secretary and then Acting Secretary of Public Safety. A Mobridge native, Rechtenbaugh is a graduate of Northern State University, and she received a bachelor’s degree in psychology. She received her Government Leadership Excellence certificate through the University of South Dakota.
